In Turkey, it is a statutory obligation for private entities to be a member of a chamber relevant to their activity and region, which makes the chambers powerful semi-public entities. Some of the Chambers have been established for over 100 years and have over 1,000 member associations and companies.
Istanbul Chamber of Commerce
Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ICOC) is one of Turkey's largest nongovernmental organisations aiming to promote foreign and domestic economic development within the city of Istanbul, as well as support the Turkish economy as a whole. With nearly 300,000 active members, ICOC is one of the largest chambers of commerce in the world and an active member of the international business community. Each year, ICOC hosts more than 50 foreign trade delegations, organises around 15 fairs and exhibitions abroad in order to contribute to the introduction of Turkish companies and products to foreign markets, and organises more than 100 informative meetings, conferences, seminars and events.
Izmir Chamber of Commerce
During its history of thousands of years, Izmir had one of the most important ports of the Mediterranean Sea. Izmir has gained in importance and has become the most important exportation gate since the reign of Ottoman Empire. This has led to the creation of thorough trade tradition in Izmir. Tradesmen of Izmir have made imports from and exports to many countries all over the World for centuries. Izmir is the third largest city in our country in terms of economy and has maintained its important role both in Turkish and Mediterranean trade even after the Turkish Republic was established. Our Chamber which was set up in 1885 and which is now one of the most powerful and most established professional institutions of both our city and our country with more than 70 thousand members has become the most influential institution for the improvement of trade in Izmir. We place a special emphasis on foreign investors while we work with our experienced staff for the purpose of increasing the trade volume of our members and developing the economy of our city and country.
Konya Chamber of Industry
Following the publication of Law on Chambers of Commerce and Industry in 1925, the Konya Chamber of Commerce was registered as a legal entity – formed second after the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce. From this date, it was also compulsory for registration to Chamber for all persons engaged in commercial activities. With an increase in the number of tradesmen and industrialists and the improvements in production sector, Konya Chamber of Commerce today boasts over 18.000 tradesmen and industrialists with 43 professional committees in its structure.
The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey
The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) is the highest legal entity in Turkey representing the private sector. Similar to the patterns of guilds and syndicates, which traditionally organized and represented tradesmen and producers throughout the Turkish history, TOBB, too, adopted a representative role in a democratic and modern society. Today, TOBB has 365 members in the form of local chambers of commerce, industry, commerce and industry, maritime commerce and commodity exchanges.
