Jordan is divided into twelve governorates which are guided by a governor and are subdivided into smaller administrative regions. These governorates consider as extension of the central government and are under the control of the Ministry of the Interior. However the governors of these areas have wide administrative authority. Governorates have municipal councils elected by the local residents for four year.
